February 6 – The Black Day
On February 6, 2023, a devastating double earthquake struck northern Syria and southern Turkey, causing widespread destruction and turning the area into instant disaster zones. The epicenter was in Marash, Gaziantep, and the border region of Hatay with Syria.
With a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale, the earthquake left countless individuals in dire need of assistance and support. In response, our hospitals in “SEMA” were filled to capacity. We immediately provided initial medical aid, rescued the injured, and assessed the emergency requirements. We established temporary accommodation camps with heating and furniture, while continuing to provide life-saving medical services in our hospitals.
The Deep Impact of the Earthquake
The earthquake had a significant impact on the affected areas, resulting in substantial damage to infrastructure, homes, and essential facilities, including healthcare and social facilities belonging to “SEMA” This led to the displacement of thousands of originally displaced families, leaving them homeless once again after military operations.
All of this has placed us in a situation with endless needs for basic necessities such as bread, food, water, and healthcare, in addition to urgent psychological support to cope with the shock and distress that has affected the lives of thousands in our community.
“SEMA” Response
“SEMA” launched a comprehensive relief campaign to provide immediate assistance to the earthquake victims. Our teams worked tirelessly on the ground, tirelessly assessing the needs, distributing essential supplies, and providing medical aid to the injured.
We raced against time to reach as many affected individuals as possible and provide them with the urgent support they needed.
“SEMA’s” Response Included:
- Emergency Relief Kits and Supplies: “SEMA” distributed hundreds of relief kits daily, containing essential items such as food, clean water, blankets, hygiene supplies, and other necessary provisions.
- Medical Assistance: Our medical teams provided urgent medical care and support to the earthquake victims, ensuring they received necessary treatment, medications, and specifically life-saving surgeries (particularly orthopedic surgeries).
- Shelter and Rehabilitation: “SEMA” provided temporary shelters and supported rehabilitation efforts to assist affected families in their recovery and rebuilding of their lives.
