What is Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr is a charity due at the end of Ramadan, before Eid prayer. It must be given to the poor before people go out to perform the Eid prayer. If it’s delayed beyond that time, it’s considered regular charity. It’s permissible to give it a day or two before Eid.

Zakat Al-Fitr Ruling

Islamically, Zakat Al-Fitr is obligatory on every Muslim who has more than they need for themselves and their dependents on the day of Eid and its night. It must be given for oneself and for those whom one is obligated to financially support, regardless of their gender or age.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) made Zakat Al-Fitr obligatory on every Muslim.”

It also serves as purification from idle talk and minor sins, making it more likely for fasting to be accepted and for good deeds to be rewarded, and sins to be forgiven during Ramadan.

Zakat Al-Fitr Wisdom

By paying Zakat Al-Fitr, your fasting is purified, your soul is cleansed, and the hearts of the needy are made happy on Eid. It demonstrates the essence of fasting in feeding the poor and needy.

Narrated by Ibn Abbas: “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory as a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscenities, and as food for the needy. Whoever pays it before the prayer, it is an accepted Zakat, and whoever pays it after the prayer, it is just regular charity“.
