Reasons for the Celebration of Eid in Islam
Muslims celebrate two major Eids every year that distinguish them from others. It is narrated on the authority of Anas Ibn Malik that when Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) came to al-Madinah, the people had two days on which they engaged in games.
He (ﷺ) said: “Allah has substituted for you something better than them: the day of sacrifice and the day of breaking the fast.” [Reported by Abu Dawud and an-Nasa’i].
- Eid al-Fitr: It marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan as Muslims celebrate the breaking of their fast and thank God for completing the worship of fasting and their ability to abstain from the temptations of life throughout the month.
- Eid al-Adha: also known as “the Feast of Sacrifice,” commemorates the revival of the story of the Prophet Ibrahim when God commanded him to sacrifice his son Ismail to test his faith. It also coincides with the end of Hajj.
